Blood Donation

Canine and feline blood donation plays a critical, life-saving role in veterinary medicine. Just like in human healthcare, pets may require blood transfusions during emergencies such as trauma, surgery, severe anemia, clotting disorders, or certain diseases. Having access to safe, readily available blood can make the difference between life and death. Because blood cannot be manufactured, donations from healthy pets are essential and always in need. By choosing to have your pet become a donor, you are directly helping save the lives of other beloved animals in our community.

If you’re interested in helping, you can donate directly through Ocean State Veterinary Specialists Blood Bank or inquire with our clinic to have your pet added to our local donor list for emergency situations. General requirements for canine donors typically include being healthy, up to date on vaccines, between 1–7 years old, over 50 pounds, and having a calm, friendly temperament. Feline donors are usually required to be indoor-only, healthy, up to date on vaccines, between 1–7 years old, and weigh at least 10 pounds. All donors undergo screening to ensure they are a safe match, and the donation process is closely monitored and well-tolerated by most pets.

If you think your pet may be a good candidate, we’d love to talk with you. Becoming a donor is a simple, meaningful way to give back - and your pet could help save a life when it matters most!
